Behind Blue Eyes part 6: The Towers of the Vyrum

Dalfo the halfing tells the party of little known door located behind a waterfall at the rear of the towers. This passage was used to take supplies into the redoubt and while it was heavily guarded, might be unknown to the Urok occupiers.

The party approaches out of view of the towers and finds the scene of an ancient battle. A massive swath of bones, perhaps of Vyrum warriors, seems to litter the area. They ring the ossified skeleton of a twenty-five foot giant in a pool. The ancient historians in the party intuit that this was a Titan, who was fought off by the Vyrum and killed.

The ground is obviously cursed and the bones of these things begin to come to life. The party makes short work of them and proceeds behind the waterfall. There they find stairs leading down and a subterranean passage of stone which leads towards the towers. This passage is not unguarded, however, the Urok have placed sentries. What's more they have begun to flood the passage with water.

The party makes its way forward and finds safety on the other side. Short work is made of the Urok, though Greatjaw Hordekeeper himself is nowhere to be found. Aya, finds a stone pedestal which radiates magical energies that she alone can feel. She asks the party to crack open the pedestal, but is made fun of and they refuse. She then returns to her master using the Splinter of the Mind's eye gifted to her for such an emergency.

Aya's discussion with Magister Nystul proves to be less than laudatory. The wizard master is highly upset that Aya did not return with the item she was tasked to get. He then uses the Splinter to send back four warriors to retrieve the item, which the party quickly dispatches.

In the absence of Aya, the Deathstroke the Half orc, smashes the pedestal open despite the protests and objections of the rest of the party. He retrieves a piece of amber with a ruby inside of it. Onogg demands the item, stating that he will hold it for safe-keeping. Not being interested in amber, rubies or rubies set in amber, Deathstroke hands over the bauble and inquires about the weapons the warriors held.

Because they killed everything in sight, the party returns to Haldon's Hall and wrongly tells him that Greatjaw was slain and that the ancestral home of his family was left vacant.

  1. We didn't make fun of her, she demanded the party do so as if they were her hirelings. When told to ask politely they were told "just do it".

    Deathstroke was not there.

Nystul sent back some of his retinue with mining equipment in order to retrieve the stone. They arrived just as Aya left. They took one look at half-orc Onag and two barbarians and decided they were dealing with unskilled savages. After threats were ignored they drew their weapons and were slaughtered quickly.

Now realizing Aya was insisting so strongly for a reason, the party used the aforementioned mining equipment to dig out the Eye. Onogg assured the party it was best to remain in his care, which they agreed due to a lack of knowledge concerning magic.

  2. I remember Logan being criticized for opening that pedestal.
